Here are 5 of the best surf spots in Ireland for all levels

Whether you’re a seasoned surfer or it’s your first foray into Atlantic waves, we at Subtle Poison don’t discriminate (we all have to start somewhere, right?)

If you’ve not got your own equipment, most of these spots have rental options nearby, as well as surf schools that can ensure you have a fun and safe time.

Here’s a quick rundown of some hidden (and some not-so hidden) gems where iconic waves meet idyllic landscapes.

North Donegal

Dunfanaghy is quickly becoming one of the most popular surf spots in the border county, and it's easy to see why.

There are multiple Blue Flag beaches within walking distance of the village which means, depending on conditions, there's something for all levels.

If you need a refresher, check out Narosa Surf School.

Inis Oírr

For the smallest of the Aran Islands, Inis Oírr makes a big impression.

It's a peaceful getaway for nature lovers. But don't let the idyllic scenery fool you - there are sick waves to catch too.

Check out An Trá and explore the island.

Lahinch

The Co Clare gem is far from hidden, but for good reason.

The non-stop waves are uniform and people come from all over to have a go.

There are parts suitable for beginners, while more experienced surfers can check out the rocky headland on the south of the beach.

North Sligo

Those looking for a rush will certainly find it in Mullaghmore. The Sligo waves bring power and drama! But don’t worry, it’s also a fab spot for spectating.

If you’re looking to just dip your toe into the surf, just a 15 minute drive down the road you’ll find Streedagh beach, which is a lot more beginner friendly.

Portrush

Take a trip over the border to a hotspot many southerners miss out on. Portrush is a gorgeous seaside town with all the trimmings, including a great surf.

The rugged northern coast makes for a stunning view when you’re out there!
